How did such a big fraud happen?
According to the report of South China Morning Post, using this technology, criminals made deepfake live video conferencing calls and defrauded such a huge amount of money. Let us tell you in detail how someone can commit such fraud by making a live video call by posing as a fake person.
According to the report, the criminals posed as the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) of the company and made a live video call to the company’s employee. During this fake video conference call, the criminals had kept with them the fake CFO as well as some other top officials of the company. During this video call, the criminals, pretending to be senior officers of the company, ordered the employee to transfer money to different places, which the employee accepted as the senior officers of his company and transferred the money. In this way, the employee transferred an amount of more than Rs 25 million i.e. about Rs 207 crore from the company’s account and a huge fraud was committed with the company.
What did the police say?
When the company employees came to know about this fraud, they went to the police. During investigation, the police found that a video conferencing call was made to the company employee using deepfake technology, and he was fooled. According to Hong Kong police, this is the first case in which deepfake technology has been used to defraud a financial agency.
Talking about this, Senior Superintendent Baron Chan Shun-ching said, for this fraud, a multi-person video call was conducted in which all the people were fake. He told that the criminals used deepfake technology to copy the voices of senior employees of the company and made them according to their script, so that the people listening in the video call would find their voices absolutely real.
